3 more tutorials requested at the ask the maker 2.0 at icon_talk.
I use Photoshop CS5, Idk if they are translateable. But for the Vibrance layers, you can use Hue/Saturation and up the Saturation just a tiny bit.
>>
01. This cap is quite dark and dull, therefore I added a new curves layer with settings looking like this: RGB || RED || GREEN || BLUE
See how all of the settings have the upper dot above the line and the lower dot under the line? I love using curves this way, it creates these great contrasts and colors.
02. Now stamp your layers (ctrl>alt>shift>e), go to Filter >> Blur >> Gaussian Blur 5 pixel radius. Set this layer to soft light. Gives lovely light!
03. Dublicate the Curves layer from the first step and bring it top the top of the layer panel. This will make the backround more blue and the king more orange-ish.
04. Stamp your layers again (ctrl>alt>shift>e), and go to filter >> filter gallery >> angled strokes (this is under brush strokes). Set the settings to your liking, but ALWAYS set the sharpness to 0. I think I used something like 44, 19, 0. Click ok. Now choose the eraser tool and erase the parts that cover his body. The layer should now look like a frame of some sort. I used to use this effect a lot before, I think it gives cool results when you think your icon is lacking something.
05. Vibrance layer: +100
This makes the colors pop.
Your icon should now look something like this:

06. It looks pretty nice now, but I find the icon a bit boring, therefore I added this (I believe I re-sized it a bit before adding it to the icon) texture by NYVelvet @ DeviantArt. Set it to Screen 100%.
07. Stamp your layers again, and sharpen the icon to your liking.
08. Ok, so I have this thing for changing the reds to pink. Idk why, but I think it looks pretty! So I added a new Selective coloring layer which is great if you want to work with individual colors. I used these settings:
REDS: +51, +52, -68, 0
09. His skin now looks a bit too pink, so I added a Vibrance layer to bring out the orange colors more: Vibrance +66
Dublicate the Vibrance layer once.
10. The final touch is just to add a bit of light to his face. Choose the soft edged brush, white color, around 80 px size and click once on his face (just below his left cheek). Set the layer to 11% opacity.
And done!

The following two tutorials are for composition (not coloring).
01. Do your normal cropping and coloring.
Mine looks like this:

Kinda over-saturated, but oh well.
02. I added this texture (re-sized it first) by
colordrop and set it too Screen.
I like scratchy textures. :3
03. Now, I added the second image like this:

04. Now it's time to use one of my favorite filters, the Angled Strokes. First you have to stamp your layers (ctrl>alt>shift>e). Go to Filter > Filter Gallery > Brush Strokes > Angled Strokes. Use settings 44, 12, 0. Click ok. Now use the eraser tool with soft edges and erase what covers their faces.
05. I wanted more light in the icon, so I added this texture by
lemonpunch (I LOVE THIS TEXTURE) on Screen.
Masked away some of it like this:

06. And now, to spice things up a bit, I found the base I started with again and shrinked it:
>>
Drag it over to the icon and place it just a little left of Blair's face and set it to screen:

07. Now to add the text/scratch texture. This one by
azuremonkey. (I LOVE THIS TEXTURE TOO). Set it on Screen.
08. Almost done now! Just add this texture by
innocent_lexys. Set it on Screen 15%. Makes the top lighter and more purple.
09. Sharpen if you want. :)
Done!

When I make these kind of icons, I just go crazy and don't really know what to do, so this is the result of me going nuts. :P
I am aware that the coloring in the examples here are not quite like the original, but that's not the point, right? :)
01. Crop and color to your liking.
I start with this one:

02. Start with duplicating your base and drag the copy like this:

03. Duplicate it again, go to filter > filter gallery > brush strokes > angled strokes.
Settings: 62, 15, 0.
Now drag this layer to the side like this:

04. Stamp your layers (ctrl>alt>shift>e). Drag the layer to the upper left corner:

05. Duplicate the last layer and drag it to the right:

06. Stamp your layers again. Go to Edit > Transform > Rotate 90° CCW. Drag the layer to the lower right corner so that only the upper left part of it is visible like this:

07. To add some brightness to the top, use a soft edge brush like this:

08. Stamp your layers. Copy that layer and re-size it:

Put it to the left in the middle:

09. Now add the second image and set it on screen like this:

10. Duplicate the latest layer and place it below the last one:

11. Duplicate it again and bring it to the top:

12. And the final step! Stamp your layers again (ctrl>alt>shift>e) and drag it to the far left like this:

And done!

Date: 2012-08-25 11:10 am (UTC)When you stamp the layers, you kinda merge all the layers into one layer on top of all the layers. It's that layer (which should include the green bar on the left) you drag upwards and to the left.
I hope you understand! :)
