Another requested tutorial for ask the maker. :)

As usual;
I almost always work with a 200x200 canvas, and since the psd's are saved as 100x100, I had to re-create the step by step images, but the outcome should be somewhat the same. :)
The base:

I really love the shadows in this cap, so I wanted to play more with them.
01. Let's start with this magnificent texture by mm3butterfly to add more shadows to the right side of the icon. Add the texture, flip it horizontally and set it to soft light. Mask away the white part of the texture.

02. It's too dark, so we need to add a brightness/contrast layer with brightness: +97.
It's a bit too bright to left of his chin and in the upper left corner, so use a soft edged brush and mask away those parts.

03. Now, to get that purple coloring, add a new color fill layer with #4f66b0 and set it to soft light. Color fill layers are your friend! So don't be afraid to use them. :)

04. To make the lighting more interesting, let's add a gradient fill layer. Choose a black and white gradient and set the angle of the gradient fill to 176,82. Set the layer to hard light 30%.

05. We need more glow! Stamp your layers (ctrl+alt+shift+e) go to filter>>blur>>gaussian blur 14px. Set the layer to soft light. Now I think this made his nose look a bit funny, so let's mask away the part covering his nose.

06. Now we need something to fill out those blacks. Open this texture by mm3butterfly and blur it with with gaussian blur 14px. Add it to the icon and set it to screen.

07. I'd like some more contrast. A great way to get that is to add a new gradient map with a black and white gradient, set to soft light, and in this case 65% opacity.

08. I think the darker parts need to be a bit brighter, so add another brightness/contrast layer, with brightness +15.
Mask away over the brightest parts of the icon.

09. It's time to sharpen! Stamp your layers, go to filter>>filter gallery>>artistic>>paint daubs. Set both settings to 1 and brush type to simple. Mask away over his nose and hair. Re-size the icon to 100x100px.

10. Duplicate the brightness/contrast layer from step 8, and change the settings to brightness +40 to get that final needed brightness. Drag the layer to the top.

11. I'd like a teensy bit more vibrance, so add a new vibrance layer with vibrance +10. (You can use hue/saturation with a lower setting if you don't have vibrance.)

12. For the final step (which is probably unnecessary, but hey it's what I did for some reason) add a new black and white gradient map. Set it to soft light 2%.

If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask! :)

Date: 2014-02-01 09:43 pm (UTC)Yeah, if I'm sharpening I use paint daubs, but usually only before I re-size to 100x100. If you use it on a 100x100 canvas I think it can look too sharp. But if you're going for that really gritty, sharp look, you can use it after re-sizing.
If I want some extra sharpening after re-sizing I usually use either High Pass or the normal Sharpen filter. :)
